His longest-running research interests are in low-pressure plasmas for materials processing, and his group has helped uncover key elements of the mechanisms of plasma etching that have led to improvements in industrial semiconductor processing.

Recently, his work has been increasingly focused on understanding the physics and chemistry of atmospheric plasmas, and how they interact with materials and biological systems. His current work includes several projects exploring the mechanisms, generation, control, and applications of atmospheric plasmas in the new field of Plasma Medicine.
